Our Father’s Love for Israel Part 2

Romans 11:1-6

1. Foreknowledge means God chose to know Israel intimately.

Definition of prognisoko (foreknowledge) according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary of the New Testament:

“In the language of Scripture, something foreknown is not simply that which God was aware of  prior to a certain point. Rather, it is presented as that which God gave prior consent to, that which received His favorable or special recognition. Hence, this term is reserved for those matters which God favorably, deliberately and freely chose and ordained.”

 2.  Foreknowledge means God committed to make them “His People.”

  • Deut 7:6-8 – “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.7 It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, 8 but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers
  • Ps 105:8-10 –He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations, 9  the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac, 10 which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant

a.     Jezreel (son) —–“God sows”
b.       Lo-Ruhama (daughter) — “She has not received mercy”
c.       Lo-Ami (son) —  “Not my people”

  • Hos 1:10-11 – Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. And in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to them, “Children of the living God.
  • Isa 49:15-16 – “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. 16 Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.

3.  Foreknowledge means God chose to establish Israel through the remnant of Israel.

  • 1 Kings 19:10-11 – He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.”
  • Isa 10:20 – In that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more lean on him who struck them, but will lean on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
  • Isa 37:31-32 – And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward. 32  For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
  • Rom 9:27-29 – And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved, 28 for the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth fully and without delay.” 29 And as Isaiah predicted, “If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring, we would have been like Sodom and become like Gomorrah.”
