Qualities of Biblical Love, Part 3

Passage: Romans 12:12

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 

Introduction

  • Philem 4-7 – I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, 5 because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and all the saints, 6 and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ. 7 For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you

21 Qualities of Biblical Love:

(Part 1)

1.  Biblical love must be genuine.
2.  Biblical love must abhor what is evil.
3. Biblical love calls us to hold fast to what is good.
4.  Biblical love calls us to brotherly affection.
5.  Biblical love outdoes one another in showing honor.

(Part 2)

6. Biblical love is not slothful in zeal (v. 11a)
7. Biblical love fervently serves the Lord (v. 11b)

8. Biblical love rejoices in hope

  • Gal 5:22-23 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law
  • Rom 14:17 – For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
  • 1 Peter 1:3-6 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
  • Heb. 11:1 – Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
  • 1 Peter 1:8-9 – Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
  • Heb. 6:11-12 – And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
  • Titus 2:11-13 – For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13  waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,


9. Biblical love is patient in tribulation

  • Matt 13:20-21 – As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.
  • 1 Peter 4:13-14 – But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.
  • 1 Thess. 1:6 – And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit
  • Phil 1:29-30 – For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, 30 engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.
  • James 1:2-5 – Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
  • Rom 5:3-5 – More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance,4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

10. Biblical love is constant in prayer

  • Heb. 4:16 – Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
  • Gal. 6:10-12 – We wrestle not against flesh and blood but against rulers, against the authorities against the cosmic powers over the present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
  • 1 Thess. 2:19-20 – For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? 20 For you are our glory and joy.
  • Phil 1:21-24 – For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.22 If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. 24 But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.
  • Ps 2:8 – Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.
