What is the Gospel?

Imagine you are a great painter who spent months and months painting a masterpiece. What if, right after you put the finishing touches on it, someone came along and took credit for your masterpiece?

That’s exactly how the Bible describes the relationship between mankind and his Creator. Genesis 1 says that God created all mankind in His image to reflect His glory.

But instead of giving glory to God, mankind took credit for what He had done and robbed Him of the glory that rightfully belonged to Him.

Romans 1:18-23 states that God’s imprint was clearly seen in all of creation, but man chose to worship the creation rather than the Creator.

As a result of this rebellion, the Bible says that God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.

As a result, all men will one day face a holy God who will demand justice for this injustice against Him.

Hebrews 9:27 says that it is appointed for all men to die once, and then comes judgment. This is the state of all mankind (Rom. 3:23).

But the gospel—the good news—is that God chose to have mercy on us and to provide a way for sinners to be released from this judgment.

In John 3:16, God says that He loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son, and whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.

Jesus took the punishment that we deserved for our sin so that we could be reconciled to holy God. Jesus, who knew no sin, became sin that we might become the righteousness of God (2 Cor. 5:20).

To receive this gift and be forgiven of our sins, the Bible calls all men to repent and acknowledge their sins before God. If we do this, and ask for forgiveness, God who is faithful and just will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
